Cannata and Misiti Discuss Buc-ee’s Parody Suit
August 4, 2026 |Michael Cannata and Frank Misiti were quoted in the August 3 Promotional Products Association International article, “‘Buc-Off:’ John Oliver Dares Buc-ee’s To Sue Over Parody Merch.”
The article cites the July 26 episode of Last Week Tonight, in which host John Oliver introduced a parody merchandise line called “Buc-off” to challenge Buc-ee’s history of trademark lawsuits against smaller businesses using similar cartoon-animal logos. Oliver argued that his show has the resources to fight back in ways smaller companies often cannot.
While Michael explained that trademark parody requires a careful balance, Frank added that liability could extend beyond the creator of the merchandise.
