Rivkin Radler Honors Juneteenth

June 18, 2021 | Evan H. Krinick

“Today, our offices will close early in honor of Juneteenth which celebrates the end of slavery in our nation.  It was on this date in 1865 when news of the Emancipation Proclamation reached Texas, more than two years after its announcement.

While slavery has long been legally rejected, racism and prejudice continue to plague our nation and our community.  Racism is not someone else’s problem; it is our collective and individual problem.  To be sure, bias, whether express or implied, is all too prevalent in our society.  Each of us, by action or words, can take steps to help our society become free of racism, prejudice and discrimination.

I hope we will all take some time this day to reflect on these important issues, celebrate how far we have come to create a just and equitable society, and consider how far we  still need to travel to reach our destination of a truly free nation for every person.

To learn more about our history.  I recommend  a virtual tour of the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture’s Slavery and Freedom exhibit.”
