Lewis Quoted in Crain’s Article on Intensifying Cyberthreats

June 11, 2021 | Privacy, Data & Cyber Law

Shari Lewis was quoted in the Crain’s New York Business article, “The NY law businesses should know about as cyberthreats intensify.”

The article discusses how recent hacks have raised the alarm for New York businesses. One year ago, the state enacted a new law requiring strengthened cybersecurity. The law attempted to minimize potential loopholes. Companies are legally obligated to report cyberattacks in which consumer data is accessed in any form and could face fines if they do not.

“The first big change is that the SHIELD Act more comfortably applies notification responsibilities to ransomware situations,” said Lewis.

The law also requires that companies institute reasonable safeguards to protect consumer data.
