Lewis Quoted in Crain’s about Russian Data Hack

December 18, 2020 | Privacy, Data & Cyber Law

Shari Claire Lewis was interviewed for the Crain’s New York Business article, “US government hack highlights cyber risks for city businesses,” which discusses the impact on small businesses of the recently revealed data hack on the U.S. federal government, purportedly sponsored by Russia.

“We have a number of companies now coming to us and saying, ‘Do I have to worry about this?'” Shari noted. “The answer is ‘Yes, you do.'”

She said that the breach should serve as a wake-up call to businesses large and small: “While the most expensive attacks are these massive malware attacks, the most common are smaller and come from errors in systems or errors by employees.”

Shari encourages companies to ensure their employees practice good “cyber-hygiene,” including such measures as downloading software updates as they are available and frequently changing passwords.
