Del Pizzo Comments on NIL Movement in College Sports

Nancy Del Pizzo was quoted in the article, “Attorneys Offer Thoughts of How College Athletic Departments Should Cope with NIL Movement” in the July 30, 2021 issue of Sports Litigation Alert.

In a Q&A style, the article interviewed several attorneys about the NIL movement in college sports and how athletic departments must weigh the recruiting advantage against the legal risks.

Del Pizzo stated, “Now that collegiate student athletes, depending on their jurisdiction, have opportunities for endorsement deals, universities may want to take a more active role in advising athletes about the use of school property. In other words, while some college athletes now have a right to monetize their name, image, and likeness, that does not give them the right to use the intellectual property owned by the university in doing so unless the school allows for it.”
