Joseph N. Salomon
Senior Counsel
For over three decades, Joe has served clients including wealthy families and individuals needing estate planning documents and sophisticated tax planning advice. He also assists privately held companies with tax planning issues and tax controversies.
Joseph Salomon is senior counsel to the firm in the Trusts & Estates and Tax Practice Groups. He has practiced in the areas of trusts and estates and taxation for more than 30 years. His clients range from privately held companies, for whom he acts as a de facto general counsel, to wealthy families with a broad range of planning issues, to clients needing basic planning documents such as wills and trusts.
In his trusts and estates practice, Joe uses complex planning techniques to pass assets, including businesses, to successive generations. Joe has been involved in acquisitions and has negotiated many shareholder and partnership agreements. Joe focuses on attaining his clients’ goals in the most tax-efficient manner. He has been privileged to work with multiple generations of clients. As an example, the fourth generation of one of his clients, a family-owned manufacturing business, relies on Joe’s guidance.
He has also participated in the administration of many estates, including the representation of clients in contested estates.
Joe’s tax practice spans a broad range of planning issues and controversies. He has guided the reorganization of corporations – both mergers and breakups – that resulted in no tax liability for either party. He “domesticated” several foreign real estate corporations to achieve favorable tax results. Drawing on his early experience as a corporate and securities litigator, Joe has successfully handled many tax audits including those involving valuation issues, and New York State domicile audits, which are becoming more prevalent as taxpayers move to other jurisdictions to reduce their exposure to state taxes.
Prior to joining Rivkin Radler, Joe co-founded a boutique firm principally focused on tax and trust and estate matters, where he worked for 32 years.
