Vanunu Quoted in Times Union

Michael Vanunu was quoted in a Times Union article, “No new funding for NY’s criminal justice overhaul.” The article discusses how local law enforcement agencies and district attorneys will have to reconcile how to pay for the criminal justice reforms that were passed by the state lawmakers.

Vanunu informed how this forecast didn’t consider existing programs that are in place already and the entire scope of the reforms.

Vanunu said the increased use of desk appearance tickets, as opposed to keeping people charged with misdemeanors and low-level felonies in custody before they can see a judge, will likely reduce costs for law enforcement. He said this could also save money for courts that are open on nights and weekends.

“Bail reform will significantly change the amount of people who are incarcerated,” he added.
