Queenan and Bernstein Present at Employment First Conference in Albany

John Queenan and Dan Bernstein presented on the topic “Disability in the Workplace: Protections under Federal and State Law” at the Employment First conference hosted by Our Ability and New York Business Leadership Network on Wednesday, October 18, 2017 in Albany.  Our Ability is the only disability owned and operated business dedicated to building employment opportunities through its job platforms, employment webinars, digital profile system and personal empowerment.  The New York Business Leadership Network is a coalition among businesses in New York State interested building a diverse workforce through hiring individuals with disabilities and including disability owned companies in the supply chain.

The conference brought together businesses, service providers, job seekers and students from across the state to reaffirm commitment to making New York a successful Employment First state.  John and Dan addressed the history of federal and state anti-discrimination initiatives, including the Rehabilitation Act, New York State Human Rights Law, and Americans with Disabilities Act, and employers’ obligations and best practices from both compliance and employee relations perspectives.  The conference also featured presenters including Congressman Paul Tonko; John Allen, Office of Mental Health’s Special Assistant to the Commissioner; and Helene DeSanto, Acting Executive Deputy Commissioner of the Office for People with Developmental Disabilities.  Representatives from Price Chopper and CVS shared their approaches to recruiting, hiring and training qualified job candidates who have disabilities, and rounding out the agenda were workshops from Living Resources’ College Experience program and New York State Rehabilitation Association’s partnership with FuzeHub.
