Gene Kang has extensive experience in civil litigation and corporate counseling, including trial and appellate work involving complex commercial matters, intellectual property, insurance law disputes, and labor and employment issues, and he has served as trial counsel in both federal and state courts.

Gene is a Partner in Rivkin Radler’s Commercial Litigation, Intellectual Property, Insurance Coverage, and Insurance Fraud Groups. His practice includes representing a wide-array of clients, ranging from mid-size businesses to large pharmaceutical and Fortune 500 companies, in complex, high-stakes commercial litigations, such as contractual, business torts and shareholder and partnership disputes, as well as a wide variety of intellectual property matters, including Lanham Act, restrictive covenants, unfair competition, trade secrets, copyrights, trademarks, and patent cases.

Gene also represents insurance carriers in complex insurance coverage disputes and subrogation claims, including environmental and catastrophic claims, and bad faith actions, and also in prosecuting complex civil lawsuits under the federal Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) Act to recover damages from large-scale insurance fraud schemes.

Prior to joining Rivkin Radler, Gene served as an Assistant District Attorney in the Nassau County District Attorney’s Office where he acted as lead counsel in numerous jury trials and prosecuted high-profile felonies and homicides. While an Assistant District Attorney, Gene received the Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) Award for Recognition of Excellence for his dedication and service to the mission of MADD.

Gene currently serves as General Counsel to the Board of Directors of the Council of Korean Americans. He is also an active member of the Judiciary Committee of the New York City Bar Association. He is the immediate past President of the Korean American Lawyers Association of Greater New York (KALAGNY) and sat on the board of the Korean American Association of Greater New York (KAAGNY). He is a member of the Board of Directors of the International Association of Korean Lawyers (IAKL). Appointed by the Supreme Court of New Jersey, Gene served on the District Ethics Committee for Bergen County South from 2017 to 2021.

Gene is a member of the Board of Trustees of the Southpole Foundation, led by David Kyhm and Kenny Kyhm, the founders of the Southpole apparel brand. Since its formation in 2003, the Southpole Foundation has been a leading donor to over 20 community-based organizations in New York and New Jersey providing critical services related to education, health, social services. He is on the Board of Directors of Korean Community Services (KCS) and Korean American Civic Empowerment (KACE).

Gene graduated cum laude with Honors in Politics and Economics from New York University. Gene attended Fordham University School of Law where he served as a Notes and Articles Editor of the Fordham Urban Law Journal and was a member of the Fordham Moot Court Team. Gene currently serves as an adjunct professor at Fordham University School of Law.

The New Jersey Law Journal named Rivkin Radler’s Intellectual Property Practice Group the Intellectual Property Litigation Department of the Year (Midsize) for 2018. Since 2019, The Legal 500 has recommended Rivkin Radler’s Insurance Coverage practice in the insurance: advice to insurers category. He also was named a New Jersey Super Lawyer Rising Star from 2021 to 2024. In 2017, the Commerce and Industry Association of New Jersey (CIANJ) awarded Gene with its Gamechanger Future Leaders Award. In 2020, Gene received a Community Contribution Award from KACE, and in 2022, Gene was recognized with an award from the Consulate General for the Republic of Korea for his outstanding service to the community.
