Alan S. Rutkin handles every aspect of insurance coverage law.
Alan has represented insurance companies in insurance coverage matters for 30 years, successfully resolving more than 100 major claims involving the environment, energy, policyholder-owned insurers, and other complex issues. He also writes insurance policies.
Alan frequently speaks on insurance coverage for the American Bar Association (ABA), the Federation of Defense and Corporate Counsel (“FDCC”), and other leading professional and insurance industry organizations. Alan cochaired the FDCC’s 2017 Insurance Industry Institute. Alan has also advised, published and lectured on the emerging insurance coverage issues concerning cyber liability.
He is the past chair of the ABA’s Insurance Coverage Litigation Committee, has held many other ABA leadership positions and presently serves as one of the elected governors of the ABA’s TIPS Section. Alan is the Chair of the Insurance Coverage Section of the Federation of Defense & Corporate Counsel. Alan chairs the Litigation Committee of the American College of Coverage and Extracontractual Counsel.
In addition, Alan is a member of the American Arbitration Association’s Roster of Arbitrators, a member of the Federation of Defense and Corporate Counsel (FDCC), a member of the American Law Institute (ALI), past chair of the N.Y. State Bar Association Federal Civil Practice Program and a member of Rivkin Radler’s executive committee.
Writing is a big part of Mr. Rutkin’s work. He has written nearly 100 insurance coverage pieces. Best Review has run his insurance coverage column for more than 20 years. He was awarded for Editorial Excellence. He’s an author in the New Appleman Insurance Law Practice. Most recently, Alan completed the second edition of The Reference Handbook on the Commercial General Liability Policy. The first edition, published four years ago, was an ABA best seller.
Alan is active in the community, leads the firm’s pro bono program and received the “Leadership In Law” award from Long Island Business News. He has served on the board of trustees of the Great Neck Estates Civic Association and is past president of the Great Neck Rotary, where he coordinated annual Thanksgiving food drives that fed thousands of people.
Alan also has been active in the Steinberg Leadership Institute of the Anti-Defamation League.
The 2020 edition of the well-respected Legal 500 recommended Alan in the insurance: advice to insurers category. Alan has been named the 2018 recipient for the John Alan Appleman Award from the Federation of Defense & Corporate Counsel (FDCC). The award recognizes the Substantive Law Section Chair who has made the most outstanding contribution to the advancement of the FDCC’s educational goals through the work of his or her Section. In 2018, Alan was named to Who’s Who Legal: Insurance & Reinsurance. He is one of only 674 attorneys across 52 jurisdictions to be recognized in this prestigious publication. Alan has earned the AV Preeminent TM rating from Martindale-Hubbell and was named a Metro New York Super Lawyer in Insurance Coverage nine times between 2007 and 2019.
In 2019 and 2020, The Legal 500 recommended Rivkin Radler’s Insurance Coverage practice in the insurance: advice to insurers category. The Insurance Coverage Practice Group since 2016 has been included in the Chambers USA directory in the Insurance: Dispute Resolution: Insurer category.
