Helping his clients find clear, orderly, and practical paths to their goals is of utmost importance to Alan. While practicing law, he employs the skill of concentration that he utilizes while skiing and playing golf.
Alan Rutkin handles every aspect of insurance coverage law. He has represented insurance companies in coverage matters for more than 30 years, successfully resolving more than 100 major claims involving the environment, energy, policyholder-owned insurers, and other complex issues. He also writes insurance policies.
He frequently speaks on insurance coverage for the American Bar Association (ABA), the Federation of Defense and Corporate Counsel (FDCC), and other leading professional and insurance industry organizations. He co-chaired the FDCC’s 2017 Insurance Industry Institute. He has also advised, published, and lectured on the emerging insurance coverage issues concerning cyber liability.
In 2024, the FDCC recognized Alan with its Joseph R. Olshan Award for his work on the Communications Committee to develop a series of podcasts that have been downloaded approximately 10,000 times.
Writing is a big part of Alan’s work. He has written nearly 100 insurance coverage pieces. Best’s Review ran his insurance coverage column for more than 20 years for which he was awarded for editorial excellence. He is an author of the New Appleman Insurance Law Practice. Most recently, Alan was the lead editor of The Reference Handbook on the Commercial General Liability Policy. The first edition, published four years ago, was an ABA bestseller. The third edition was released in 2023.
Alan serves on Rivkin Radler’s Management Committee.

Alan is a leader in the world of insurance coverage law. He is the past chair of the ABA’s Insurance Coverage Litigation Committee and has held many other ABA leadership positions. He is past chair of the Litigation Committee of the American College of Coverage and Extracontractual Counsel and is a member of the American Law Institute.
In addition, Alan is a member of the FDCC, where he sat on the Board of Directors. He has served twice as FDCC’s Insurance Coverage Section Chair.
Finally, Alan was elected governor of the ABA TIPS Section.
Alan has been named to Best Lawyers in America® for Insurance Law from 2022 to 2026. Since 2022, the well-respected Legal 500 has recommended Alan in the Insurance: Advice to Insurers category. He has earned an AV Preeminent™ rating from Martindale-Hubbell and was named to Metro New York Super Lawyers for Insurance Coverage from 2007 to 2023. Since 2018, Alan has been named to Who’s Who Legal: Insurance & Reinsurance. He is among the only 769 attorneys from around the world to be recognized in this prestigious publication. In 2018, he received the FDCC’s John Alan Appleman Award recognizing the Substantive Law Section Chair who made the most outstanding contribution to advancing the FDCC’s educational goals.
