There are many honest misconceptions among the general public as to what HIPAA permits or prohibits, but some people – particularly in and around the federal government – have been exploiting the confusion for political purposes. Eric observed, “All of these health-related things get used and twisted, and they get twisted sometimes innocently, because people just don’t know what they are. And other times, it’s people who should know better.”
