Norman L. Tolle represents life, health, long term care, and disability insurance and reinsurance companies in disputes regarding customer claims, product sales, and broker and agent relationships.
Before joining Rivkin Radler, Norman was vice president and associate general counsel of The Equitable Life Assurance Society of the United States. He was responsible for complex litigation, including class actions relating to sales of life insurance, ERISA pension and welfare benefits, and litigation involving disability insurance, life insurance, employment, and real estate.
Norman chaired the Litigation Committee of the American Council of Life Insurers (“ACLI”), which filed amicus briefs in state and federal courts throughout the country on matters of significance to the life insurance industry. He currently is a member of the Life, Health and Disability Committee of the Defense Research Institute and a member of the Law Committee of the International Claim Association.
Norman is a frequent speaker at life, health, and disability insurance conferences. He has lectured at an ACLI meeting in Washington, D.C., on tort reform and at an ACLI seminar in California on “Managing Litigation,” at a number of annual meetings of the Eastern Claims Conference on a variety of topics, and to life and disability insurance field investigators on privacy and surveillance issues. Mr. Tolle also has spoken before the American Conference Institute in Boston, the American Academy of Insurance Medicine, the annual JHA Dynamics of Disability Conference, and the annual conference of the International Claims Association.
Norman, who has earned the AV Preeminent rating from Martindale-Hubbell, writes regularly on insurance topics. He has been named a 2016 Top Rated Lawyer in Insurance Law by American Lawyer Media.
In 2019, the well-respected Legal 500 recommended Rivkin Radler’s Insurance Coverage practice in the insurance: advice to insurers category. The Insurance Coverage Practice Group since 2016 has been included in the Chambers USA directory in the Insurance: Dispute Resolution: Insurer category.
