Karen E. Sosler practices primarily in the areas of healthcare and labor and employment law. She has counseled a wide variety of healthcare clients, including hospitals, hospices, adult homes, nursing homes, assisted living residents, health maintenance organizations, private physicians and practitioners and regional health information organizations.

A partner in the Firm’s Tax, Employment & Labor and Health Services Practice Groups, Karen has extensive experience handling regulatory, corporate, transactional, contract, employment, employee benefits, corporate compliance, tax exemption, certificate of need, information technology, privacy and confidentiality, and electronic medical records issues.

Karen represents tax-exempt organizations.  Such experience includes seeking initial exemption from Federal and State taxes and advising on other issues such as private inurement and private benefit, excess benefit transactions, the IRS’s intermediate sanction regulations, executive compensation, completion of Form 990, the rules on tax-exempt bond financed properties, and conflict of interest policies and other “good governance” practices for tax-exempt organizations.

Karen has lectured on various topics, including the federal “Stark” law, New York public charities, tax-exempt status for corporations, HIPAA and the confidentiality of medical records.

Before entering law school, Karen was employed with MetLife in New York City as a senior business procedure consultant, specializing in communications and marketing.

Karen was the recipient of the 1999 Capital District Women’s Bar Association’s Pro Bono Service Award (The Legal Project), and in 2005, she received the Patron of the Arts Award from the Ellen Sinopoli Dance Company, where she is a past president. She is currently a member of the American Health Lawyers Association. Karen is also a board member of the Wilton Wildlife Preserve and Park, Inc.

Karen is a graduate of Georgetown University Law Center, where she was Editor of the Georgetown Journal of Legal Ethics.
